A talk about interculturalism
A talk on how to deal with Interculturalism
We’ve got a wide range of families in our school dealing with cultural levels, social and economic situations. Different to previous years where we only received pupils from deprived areas surrounding the school. We think that our educative process has enriched due to this mixture that we now have. For example, we now have parents who are teachers in arts, physics, in high schools and universities.
An anecdote of this is, last week the tutor of 5th grade and I were introducing a new pupil from Nicaragua and we realized that only 2 girls in the class were from Málaga.
We don’t carry out special tasks or practices for attending different cultures, kind of intelligences or abilities due to our educative project, implied to carry out successful taks which are focused on mixing them all to acheive a better result. That’s the reason why no special programmes are followed to deal with differences.
The ways in which we address the different languages, cultures, nationalites.
For pupils -
Like in other schools we have an ATAL teacher.
We have successful practices such as – interactive groups, a support teacher who helps the foreign pupil inside the classroom, depending on their level, they follow the same task as their classmates or a special task using support work and materials.
For families -
Friday lessons, last year there were groups for the different aims, for example, acheiving the secondary education certificate, learning to read and write, learning spanish language. Currently, following the same philosophy we have mixed groups in which they interact together to improve their fluency in the spanish language.
‘Talks with coffee’ in which families are invited to come and listen to talks about topics that they have previously chosen, like, how to find employment, cyber bullying, how to deal with gossip, stereotypes in society. These types of talks are given by parents or by professionals from outside.
Auditions – some foreign parents or family members come to the classrooms to read story books to the pupils in english.
So, as you can see we believe in mixture of different levels, cultures and abilities to help each other to get a better common result.
